Iran ‘Breath’ to compete at Brazilian film festival

Iranian acclaimed anti-war drama ‘Breath’ directed by Narges Abyar has been accepted to vie at the 41st edition of the Sao Paulo International Film Festival (MOSTRA) in Brazil.

The film distributor recently announced that Abyar’s latest work will compete at the official competition section of the Brazilian event.

‘Breath’ shows how hopes and dreams of many Iranian children shattered by the flames of the war that Iraq lit in 1980.

The story of the film begins in the late 1970s in a suburb of Karaj, where Bahar, Nader, Kamal and Maryam live with numerous colorful dreams of their childhood along with their father and granny. The mother of the household, however, has died a few years ago.

The father, who suffers from asthma, works for a shoemaking company. In her dreams, Bahar, who narrates the story of the film, wishes to treat him when she becomes a doctor.

Iranian actors and actresses Gelare Abbasi, Mehran Ahmadi, Jamshid Hashempour, and Shabnam Moqaddami star in ‘Breath’.

The flick won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Film with National View at the 34th edition of the Fajr Film Festival held in February, 2016, in Tehran. It has been acclaimed at various international cinematic events as well.

The previous edition of the event screened more than ten highly praised Iranian productions, including ‘76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Kiarostami’ by Seifollah Samadian, ‘Another Time’ by Nahid Hassanzadeh, ‘Lantouri’ by Reza Dormishian, ‘Take Me Home’ by Abbas Kiarostami, and ‘The Salesman’ by Asghar Farhadi.

Created in 1977, the Sao Paulo International Film Festival (Portuguese: Mostra Internacional de São Paulo) is a non-profit event, organized by Associação Brasileira Mostra Internacional de Cinema.

The 41st edition of MOSTRA is slated for October 19 to November 1 in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.
